Hope Medallion-- Artist Steffen Thomas' Bronze John Hope Medallion

This is a bronze relief medallion of John Hope done by famous artist Steffen Thomas, a German-American Expressionist (1906-1990). John Hope was the first African-American President of Atlanta Baptist College (now Morehouse College), appointed in 1906. The reverse side of the medallion bears a quote by Lord Alfred Tennyson (1809– 1892). There is a marking along the edge of the medallion which reads 'Medallic Art Co NY Bronze'. The medallion is in mint condition and is marked with the artists' signature along with the year 1939. The medallion measures 2" in diameter. I wrote to the daughter of the artist for more information and was told that frequently small medallions were done in conjunction with projects such as the portrait of Dr. Hope, and that they were usually given as gift to dignitaries connected with the project. She also stated that her father had done a bronze bust of Dr. Hope in the 1940s, which is still located on the college campus.
